Dr.Ji Brings 12th International Gastric Cancer Congress(IGCC) 2017 to China--An Opportunity to Push for Prevention, Early Detection and Better Treatment of China Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer is among the 3rd in cancer incidence of both sex, and it's the second cancer mortality rate in female and 3rd in male in China. Of the 1,000,000 new gastric cancer patients, 42-45% will be from China.

1. Late stage of gastric cancer treatment

Dr. Jiafu Ji: 70% gastric cancer patients who seek medical treatment in China already in the late stage, this is very different from the situation in Japan and South Korea, which more than 50% are in early stage.

That's why our treatment models, which is called multidisciplinary team (MDT) model, is different from Japan and Korean. MDT is surgery based.

2. The Standardization and personalized comprehensive treatment in gastric cancer

Dr. Ji: Surgery is the standard treatment for advanced gastric cancer. There are about 2,000 hospitals in China that are capable of performing the operation in gastric cancer patients with great discrepancy. First we established a standardized treatment model based on guidelines and consensus, of course in the real practice, you have to consider patient's acceptance and cost issue.

In the last 10 years, our team(Cancer hospital of Beijing University) have published textbooks, videos, periodical workshop trips and symposiums, and trained more than 6,000 senior physicians. I think Chinese gastric cancer surgeon's skills have won widely recognition in the world.

Only after we have got surgery standardized, then we have appropriate supplementary treatment, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy etc. to get to precision or personalized treatment next step. This is what we are doing now.

3. What to expect for 12th IGCC?

Dr. Ji: I still remember the moment vividly of winning the host 12th IGCC in 2013. I think this demonstrated that China has won the worldwide gastric cancer oncologist peers' recognition, after several generation's Chinese gastric oncologists hard work in treatment and research.

However, about 500,000 new gastric cancer patients will be diagnosed each year in China, and in a annual accumulated rate of 3% increase according to WHO data. Majority of the patients are in advanced stage. Patients and the government are facing great burden.

The 12th IGCC held in China will be a great opportunity to raise the awareness in public and to the government.  Questions like how to prevent gastric cancer? Can we do early detection? How to treat appropriately? How to reduce recurrence?  How to foster multiple disciplinary team collaboration for patient' care? How to improve patient's life quality?

I hope the hosting of 12th IGCC will push us to work harder to advance to a higher stage to address above questions, especially on prevention, early detection, research and appropriate standard treatment procedures.
